VOX on two

Cambridge, MA

This project is based half a mile from Alewife Station, placing the complex along well-developed pedestrian routes and within direct street access to the rail line. Due to this, and the exceptional wetland views along Route 2, VOX on two is a strong transit-oriented development that has enlivened the entry to the City of Cambridge.

In addition to the wetland views, the building is surrounded by community courtyards and recreation spaces, which receive essential landscape treatment. These amenities create a naturally vegetated buffer between the building edge and the sensitive wetland ecology, and offer residents access to an expansive outdoor environment.

Throughout project development, careful attention to the disparate conditions on either side of the site combined with a focused study of the rail line access issues were upheld in order to ensure unprecedented access to both the public transit and outdoor spaces. These factors set the building apart from its adjacent competitors and allow the complex to truly encapsulate a small community.

A mixture of challenging site and environmental conditions, design goals, noise mitigation undertakings, and coordination efforts with the City of Cambridge, paired with special attention to the approach to building integration, defined this project as well as its ultimate success.
